Heart Behind The Art

  • The Root 110 E Market St. New Albany United States (map)

It all started with an idea, and it catalyzed with enthusiasm. The Root is a place for inclusion, collaboration, and innovation. It’s where locals are celebrated and stories are heard. Heart Behind The Art, held at The Root, is art in all aspects – from visual to culinary and everything in between. The first event, featuring a pop-up art gallery, live musical performance, and food tasting is not only a way for visitors to experience local art and culture, but give the artists a platform to share the reason for creating their art in the first place. For future events, we’re looking to showcase different types of artists and their multitude of mediums.

Gee Horton.jpg

Garry "Gee" Horton was born and raised in Louisville, KY. He's a self-taught, Hyper-realistic Visual Artist. His drawings often capture a heightened sense of realism through the use of graphite and charcoal pencils. Gee strives to create art that triggers a degree of emotional connection between his viewers and his subjects.

As early as he could remember, Gee has always been obsessed with art and spent a vast majority of his childhood drawing everything in his immediate surroundings. Around age 13, the artist inside of Gee was encouraged to put his drawing journal and pencils away to focus more on playing basketball, which later led to him playing college basketball and coaching after graduate school.

By the age 31, he found himself in a very promising career as college coach, working at the highest collegiate level. At the same time, he felt unhappy and very unfulfilled, both professionally and purposefully, so he picked up a drawing journal, some pencils and reconnected with his childhood artist. He later walked away from coaching and began teaching himself while pursuing an art career on the side for the pass two years. He has already gained a variety of experience; creating commission work, sidewalk murals and live art performances. He has been featured in local art exhibits such as The WE Gallery's exhibit at Cincinnati Music Hall, Artworks Secrets art show and the Mohawk Gallery’s Manifestations of time: The Black Experience exhibit.
